It's All About Balance

This picture was taken when the Senior Prefects and the Sophomore Leadership class went to Camp Mokuleia. Many of the activities we did, had a lot to do with physics. This one activity called Whale Watching related to mass and weight. Mass is the quantity of matter in an object. It is also the measure of the inertia or sluggishness that an object exhibits in response to any effort made to start it, stop it, or change its state of motion in any way. Weight is the force upon an object due to gravity. In order, for our team to balance this piece of wood we had to work with the weight of each individual of our team and the mass of the piece of wood. In the end we were able to match people by their weight and balance the wood piece for 5 seconds. :) yeah go team!AIE!

Is this like a giant seesaw? Everyone's weight creates a torque which causes the board to rotate. What you were doing was equalizing the torques to balance the seesaw. Look it up in chapter 8.
